In loving memory of Maura (1964-2008), my best friend. This blog is a gift to our sons, Sam and JJ and to everyone who knew her. The entries are in no particular order but are tagged by year and subject. Most everyone know she raced bikes for a long time but did not really see her at races. As anyone can see, she is big on cycling, Hawaii, anything pink and most importantly, life.

1993 Race Results
I found this after going through an old stack of cycling stuff. This is part of a proposal for a women's team that she put together in 1994. I don't remember her winning those 5 races in 1993 but she obviously advanced to a Category 3 racer after 2 years of racing. I do remember Race #11, the Mt Hamilton Road Race in San Jose. We drove up to the Bay Area for this race using my dad's Astrovan that we borrowed for the weekend. Mt Hamilton Road Race started in San Jose and ended up near Livermore after over 25 miles of climbing. I followed the race in the Astrovan and she finished 4th riding against very good climbers from the San Francisco/San Jose area. After this race, she pretty much decided that road races that have a lot of climbing are more suited for her skills (as opposed to those fast, hairy criteriums).
Driving A Big Red Tractor
This was on our second trip to visit her Uncle Don in Fenwick, Michigan. She drove the tractor during each of her 3 visits to his farm. Of course, he would always ride shotgun just in case...
Maura's Kachina Charms
I cannot quite remember when she got this but out of all her "stuff", this one is definitely my favorite. She was not much into gold or expensive jewelry but more into unique and original pieces like this set of silver Kachina doll charms. I'm pretty sure we got this during one of those road trips in the Southwest.

Solvang Century, 1992
This is the one and only time we did the Solvang Century. We started in Santa Maria to Santa Ynez, Solvang, Vandenberg and back. I remember getting together with 3 other people I worked with at Hughes and we just pacelined the 100 miles in a little under 5 hours. We were racing for the South Bay Wheelmen at the time so the century was a good training ride this early in the cycling season. For some reason, I ended up with a pink water bottle (which probably belonged to Maura) when this picture was taken. In order to finish the century in 5 hours, I specifically put in aerodynamic bars on my bike for a more streamlined position. In 1992, it was the cycling fad -- considering Greg Lemond won the Tour de France on the last day because he used these bars.

At Goleta Beach, 2004
This is at Goleta with our friend Cheryl in 2004. Maura liked the Santa Barbara area and when our friends Paul and Cheryl moved there, it gave us more reason to do the 2-hr drive to visit and just hang out at the beach. Maura has a couple pink visors that she always wore everytime she went out in the sun.
Like Mother, Like Son
This photo was taken on Maura's birthday, Oct 19, 2001 in the kitchen in the Pasadena house. Guess where Sam got his hair color and wave from?

Wailua River, 1984
The Wailua River boat ride to the Fern Grotto is a must-see for anyone visiting the Garden Isle. Maura first visited Kauai in 1984 and when the kids and I made the trip in 2005, she was our tour guide based on her first time. When we returned in 2007, we skipped a lot of the tourist sites and just opted to swim in the ocean a lot. This photo is scanned from Jennifer's photo album (many thanks).

High School Graduation Photo, 1982
Maura's high school graduation photo with grandmother taken in backyard of West Covina home in 1982.
Doing The Chicken Dance
Maura doing the chicken dance in Kauai in December 1984. This was on her first trip to the islands with her sister, Jennifer and co-worker Shirley. I knew she went to Hawaii before I met her but did not really see any of the pictures until last week, when I borrowed Jennifer's photo album of their trip. I scanned a few of the highlights for this blog.
