In loving memory of Maura (1964-2008), my best friend. This blog is a gift to our sons, Sam and JJ and to everyone who knew her. The entries are in no particular order but are tagged by year and subject. Most everyone know she raced bikes for a long time but did not really see her at races. As anyone can see, she is big on cycling, Hawaii, anything pink and most importantly, life.

Bike Support Tags
The two upper cards are for inserting in the spokes of spare front and rear wheels. The bottom card is to allow me, the feeder to stand in the feed zone to feed my bike racer, Maura for the Redlands Bicycle Classic in 1996. I made the laminated wheel cards and were reused for countless road races she did. All I had to do when I check in the wheels was mark her race number in the card with a Sharpie pen. Fun times.

Father's Day at LAMCA (2004)
I got to choose what I wanted to do on this Father's Day in 2004 -- so naturally, I picked to go to LACMA. The kids were in this silly phase of making faces for every photograph I asked to take as seen in the top two pics. Just above is Maura and the kids getting some lunch from a hot dog vendor off Wilshire. It was a fun day.

Pasadena (2006)
JJ took these photos with my Olympus point-and-shoot camera on Sept. 25, 2006. Below is Sam messing around with Maura in the kitchen in Pasadena. Notice the perspective of the shots from a little person (JJ was 6 at the time) perspective.
That night we went to President Thai on Rosemead Blvd to celebrate Norman's birthday. Sam is shown looking over the menu with Maura. And finally, Maura trying to get out of the crazy President Thai parking lot.

JJ's Birthday Cake (2005)
I don't remember taking this photo but the top one shows Maura in the background with JJ in front of his birthday cake. Note the red cut JJ had in his forehead, so this must have been after we got back from Yosemite. JJ slipped on some ice in the valley and hit his forehead. As typical, Maura would make sure to bake a cake to celebrate birthdays.

Maura and Judith (2003)
This is a nice photo of Maura and her mom, Judith taken at her brother's house in Covina in April 2003. Judging from the bunny decor on the back wall, I have to think it was Easter.

1992 Racing Log
This is the first year Maura got serious with USCF racing. I think she did a couple more races in August (like the Manhattan Beach Grand Prix) that she didn't write down. She was encouraged by the Santa Fe Dam Time Trial result but given her biathlon/triathlon background, a time trial wasn't surprising. The race she was most proud of was the Mt Hamilton Road Race. We traveled up to San Jose so she can do this race from San Jose to Livermore that includes a 20-mile climb on Mt Hamilton. She finished 3rd place and decided that road racing, and not criteriums were her thing. Another 2nd place finish at the Dunnigan Hills Road Race pretty much set her on this path where she wants to do 30 races a year while working full time as Cedars Sinai Hospital.

1998-1999 USCF License
Maura got this racing license in 1998 when she was pregnant with Sam (who was born June that year). She obviously didn't race that year and no club affiliation. However, she did this to maintain her Road Category 2 license (Cat 1 is reserved for the US National Team). Was she thinking of racing the year after Sam was born? Knowing her, I'm sure she was considering it. But the time commitment of racing (15-20 hrs a week on the bike) obviously conflicted with the arrival of baby Sam. She ended up giving up competitive cycling completely when JJ was born in 2000.
23.42 MPH
I found another one of these from a binder of cycling memorabilia. From one of those time trials we used to do in Telo Avenue in Torrance when we belonged to Southbay Wheelmen. Her time is usually in the top 5 amongst all categories, including Senior Men's. This one is also gear-limited to a max gear of 42x15. Unrestricted, Maura's individual time-trials during races are typically around 25 mph.
In this Pasadena Athletic Association newsletter from 1996, Maura's average speed was 24.76 mph and was enough to earn the title of Time Trial Champion for the State of California. She was proud of that accomplishment, racing just days after competing in the 1996 Olympic Trials in Pittsburgh and West Virginia.

With The Kids in Kauai
I cannot remember which beach this was taken at but you can almost make out the lava rock just behind the trees where the ocean is. I'm guessing Lydgate Park or Poipu but not really sure. All I know is after our second time in Kauai in December 2007, we needed to return.
Maura in Kapaa
I found this photo in a folder titled "Kid's Camera" along with several photos from our 2005 trip to Kauai -- our first time there. I distinctly recognize the door as that of Ono Family Restaurant in Kapaa. I think JJ snapped the pic.
