In loving memory of Maura (1964-2008), my best friend. This blog is a gift to our sons, Sam and JJ and to everyone who knew her. The entries are in no particular order but are tagged by year and subject. Most everyone know she raced bikes for a long time but did not really see her at races. As anyone can see, she is big on cycling, Hawaii, anything pink and most importantly, life.

Altitude 9000 Race, Mammoth, California 1993
Guess why they call this the Altitude 9000 race? The 48 miles race has over 5000 feet of climbing that starts from the town of Bishop and finishes at the Mammoth Ski Resort. Altitude 9000 is only one of 5 races in the 4-day Mammoth Stage Race. Most of the races were at altitude and for some reason, Maura was never bothered by the altitude at all. In the picture above, guess who was leading the women's pack in that pink helmet up Sherman Grade to Mammoth?
