In loving memory of Maura (1964-2008), my best friend. This blog is a gift to our sons, Sam and JJ and to everyone who knew her. The entries are in no particular order but are tagged by year and subject. Most everyone know she raced bikes for a long time but did not really see her at races. As anyone can see, she is big on cycling, Hawaii, anything pink and most importantly, life.

Yosemite, 2005
The kids' first time seeing El Capitan and Half Dome just after the tunnel heading into Yosemite Valley. This photo was taken on JJ's birthday, February 11, 2005. The beauty of Yosemite in the wintertime is beyond compare and there are absolutely no crowds at all.
The Other Pink
So if she cannot get it in pink, she usually will settle for the next best color. Purple. The other pink. This was taken after eating lunch at Captain Kid's in Redondo Beach in 2005.
USC Office
I had never been inside Maura's USC office until the kids and I had to pick up her personal items in December 2008. I had framed several of my photographs and had not really noticed that she took them to her office and hang on her wall. So I was somewhat surprised when we arrived and the office had a very familiar feel from the desk to the walls to the pink sweater hanging on the chair.

At Outback in Kailua-Kona, 2004
My best buddies, Maura and Samuel (Adams). This is at the Outback in Kailua-Kona. We ate at the Outback a lot at home and on the road. Maura always ordered grilled salmon over a bed of rice pilaf. Why someone would order salmon in a steakhouse, who knows but after a while, I started ordering the same thing. Sam (the real kid) took this photo while we were eating dinner.

At Goleta Beach, 2006
If it has pink, she'll wear it. Shoe-laces, jacket, wrist watch.
A few seconds after I took the first shot.
Self-Portrait (2007)
Maura took this photo while inside a children's art area at the Getty Center in 2007. I bought her the camera as a birthday gift the year prior.

Just Chillin', 2005
Chillin' out at the Irwindale Skate Park listening to her Ipod while Sam and JJ were skating. November 2005
At Race Support, Redlands Stage Race, 1996
Maura always suffered racing in the Redlands Classic, typically held early in the season. The competition was always tough and several national teams come out to race. This was at the race support in the 1996 version of the race. Maura (#268) is shown walking toward teammate Sarah (with bike mechanics).
Maura's Trek
Maura owned several road bikes during her racing career (3 Treks, 1 Cannondale, 1 Atala, 1 Look) but this carbon Trek is her favorite and did more races than any other bike. The Spinergy carbon wheels were also big back in the mid 90's and she got them almost as soon as they were available.
With Cedars Colleagues, 2004
This photo is undated and I don't think the '94 date stamp is accurate. This is around 2004 timeframe and shows Maura standing next to her good friend and colleague, Donna.
Birthday At McGrath's Fish House, Arcadia
This was in 2005 when we celebrated her birthday at McGrath's Fish House at the Santa Anita Mall in Arcadia. McGrath's closed around 2008 but we each got a Polaroid with wearing a fish hat after going there for birthdays for about a 2-year period.
In Sam and JJ's Bedroom
Don't have a date for this photo but I'm guessing sometime around 2002. Sam's preschool artworks are on the closet door.
Maura and Laura
Maura with here friend Laura. Both of them worked together at Cedars Sinai for years. This was taken at another colleague's house one summer during a pool party.

Sam Wearing Maura's USC Gown, 2007
Sam is standing on a stool and we put some shoes in front of the graduation gown to make him look taller. I took this picture in the Pasadena living room after we got home from Maura's graduation ceremonies at USC.
Racing With The Big Boys
This was at some criterium, I'm guessing around 1993 (from her Cannondale bike and Canyon Velo jersey). Women's races were usually combined by the promoter with men in order to get a bigger field (and I assume to save on prizes). She can hang with guys typically until the final sprint, when testosterone usually drives who takes the most risk in bumping elbows and bikes.
1990 Red Honda Civic
Maura's red 1990 Honda Civic with bike racks. We took it to every race until 1994, when we got the red Blazer. This photo is just before the criterium in the 1990 Santa Barbara Stage Race somewhere off State Street.
Blur
Before the days of digital cameras, all I had was a point-and-shoot film and usually end up with whatever shutter speed the camera gives me. Some race around 1994.
Maura's First Stage Race, 1990
Maura's first multi-day race, the 1990 Santa Barbara Stage Race consisting of a time trial in Carpinteria, a road race in Santa Ynes (shown above on Santa Rosa Road) and a criterium in downtown Santa Barbara. She is wearing the white Montrose jersey just behind the rider in yellow.

Malibu Creek State Park, 2005
Not only can she ride a bike and skateboard, she can also carry a wagon full of kids down a hill using only her tennis shoes as brakes. She legs got really filthy after several runs in this dusty part of Malibu Creek State Park in 2005.
Playing Around, 2005
She does have a playful side. Not sure why she was giving me the bird when I took this photo but I probably deserved it. Sometime in 2005.
Yosemite, 2005
This is at the backroads behind Tenaya Lodge in Fishcamp just outside the south entrance to Yosemite. We went to the snow a couple times for JJ's birthday. This was taken on 2/12/05.

San Luis Rey Road Race, 1994
Maura came in 3rd in this tough road race just south of Temecula behind ex-world champ Marianne Berglund and triathlete Sue Shook. After this one, she pretty much decided that she likes races with a lot of climbing. (May 1994)
At Farmer's Market, 2007
We visited Farmer's Market in Los Angeles a few times in 2007, typically for breakfast to eat at Dupar's and just walk around.

Home, 1996
Maura and Toonses in the patio, July 1996 in Pasadena. Without central air, the patio was the best option on hot, summer days. Being an indoor cat, Toonses is shown here carefully exploring the plate of food on the table.
Las Vegas, 2001
We visited my cousin Henry's family in Oct 2001. This was Maura with the kids and my cousin's kids, Joe and Kaydee playing inside a tent in the backyard.

Mother and Son, 2005
This photo is undated but probably sometime around 2005. Sam took this photo with a digital camera while JJ was getting a breathing treatment probably for a cold. He is wearing a flag made at preschool and Maura is wearing a crown made by JJ as well. Not sure what prompted the shot but Sam convinced both of them to pose for him.
With Mother, Nephews and Niece, 2001
With her mom, Judith, nephew Andrew, niece Tori and nephew Michael on Nov. 22, 2001. This was at her sister, Jennifer's house for her birthday.
Luau, 2003
Every time we went to Hawaii, she arranged for a luau. She absolutely enjoys every moment of being there including the show, typically with polynesian dancers and fire acrobatics. This was in Maui on August 2003.
Racing In The Rain, 1994
Just prior to the William Sarroyan Road Race just outside of Fresno in April 1994. Rain doesn't usually stop races from being conducted and she obviously was prepared to race in the rain -- she finished in 2nd place.
Red Atala Bike
This is Maura's red Atala bike. She quickly outgrew the blue Trek and bought this Italian bike at Helen's in Westwood around 1990. She ran into some guy at the bike path in Redondo Beach, literally and ended up bending the frame a little bit. From there, she bought the Look KG-76 bike. This one has toe-clips and all and a white Pista fame pump.

Ainofea, 1993
At a criterium in Santa Barbara in 1993. She can corner on a bike. "Ainofea" is what Hawaiians would say.
Yosemite, 1988
We went to Yosemite in the summer of 1988 to camp and do a little bit of hiking. The next time we returned to this beautiful park is in 2005 during the winter month of February to celebrate JJ's birthday.
Inside The Cave Across Ha'ena State Beach, 2005
We went to this dry cave across from Ha'ena Beach State Park in the north shore of Kauai in July 2005. This is the most beautiful part of Kauai just a few miles after Hanalei Bay. This cave is about 300 yards deep but we only went about a third of the way in and it just felt really claustrophobic.
Haircut, 2004
Maura giving JJ a haircut in May 2004 (while he was focused on that Nintendo DS). This is in the dining room in the Pasadena house. The couch was put in the dining room when the hardwood floors were refinished in the living room at the time.
Messing With JJ, 2005
Maura messing around with JJ at a diner in Lihue, Kauai. After swimming all morning, JJ fell asleep in the car and inside this diner as well. Sam and I were just laughing away as Maura put the piece of french fry for JJ to smell so he wakes up. Didn't work and he ended up sleeping through lunch. JJ didn't believe his mom did this until we showed him the picture.
